A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Moroccan High Atlas mountains on Friday, 8 September. This is the most powerful earthquake to hit the Moroccan center in over a century.
The recent earthquake that struck the Kingdom of Morocco has left more than 2000 people dead and injured. However, as many cities are still inaccessible in high mountains, this number will likely increase.
Eyewitnesses at the foothills report the destruction of several villages in remote areas.
Marrakech’s old city has been especially affected, although the full extent of damage has not yet been determined. Medina de Marrakech is the old city, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. It contains many buildings that date back to the 11th Century, when the Almoravid dynasty transformed the settlement into a cultural, political and economic center whose impact could be felt all over the Western Muslim World. Site contains many monuments dating from this period. These include the Koutoubiya Mosque and Kasbah as well as battlements, monumental gates, and gardens. The Bandia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa and Saadian Tombs are some of the later architectural landmarks.
Other media reports indicate the 69-meter high minaret known as the “roof of Marrakesh” has significant cracks. Minaret collapsed at the Kharboush Mosque, located on Jemaa el-Fna Square. The entire mosque may be in danger.
The reports also state that the red sandstone wall surrounding the ancient city has been damaged severely, and the rubble in the alleyways have made it hard for the rescue team to reach the scene. Tinmel Mosque from the 12th century, an important example of Almohad architectural style, is also destroyed. It’s located about 100 km southeast of Marrakech.
The impact on modern Marrakech has been minimal. The worst damage was caused in remote parts of the High Atlas. Al Haouz province, with its beautiful villages scattered across the mountains, was one of the worst affected.
Residents in the village Ijjoukak near the highest point of North Africa estimate 200 buildings to be completely destroyed. First aid is difficult in many of these villages because they are remote and hard to reach.
