In Walt Disney World, mold has become a major problem. After all, mold thrives in warm, damp environments. What surprises me most is that Disney refuses to take action about it. Mold has always been a problem, but Disney has dealt with it quickly in the past. It seems that they no longer take the problem seriously as we have seen an alarming number of reports in recent months.
Recently, a woman and her mother stayed at Disney’s Pop Century and became very ill. As u/jayceevail explained, “When I checked in, she immediately noticed a musty smell in our room and complained about it.” She continued by stating that the smell got worse each night. The front desk was notified about the smell, but nothing was done initially.
In the end, they got sick. “My mom felt terrible and short of breath very quickly,” the Redditor wrote. Initially, they thought her mother’s asthma was flare-up, but the odor in the room didn’t make them connect the illness. The pain was so severe I didn’t wake up until 1pm and felt like I couldn’t breathe,” u/jayceevail said.
It was apparent that something was wrong with the room when both of them were experiencing similar disturbing symptoms. Another called the front desk and informed them that they were ill and that the room needed to be checked. During the inspection, housekeeping discovered the fridge had been leaking and the entire wall behind it had been covered in mold.
They were moved to a new room this time, but the damage was already done. The two of them were ill for the remainder of the trip, according to the Redditor. Pop Century management told U/jayceevail they would receive a phone call from Disney to discuss the matter further once they returned home. The Redditor says that Disney did not call to discuss the matter with them after they checked out.
Although we’d like to think this is a rare case, it appears to be the prevalent norm. Mold has been seen on Space Mountain, the Monorail and Disney signage. Reports suggest that hazardous mold is what caused The Voyage of the Little Mermaid stage show to close. Both safety and having a good show are pillars of Disney’s Five Keys; thus, Cast Members should always prioritize safety first, as having toxic mold put guests in danger does not make for either a safe or enjoyable experience.
