Winnipeg firefighters remained at the Stradbrook Avenue scene after an early morning fire in a building high up.
The city says that the fire began at 221 Stradbrook Avenue Thursday night. Building suffered water damage, significant smoke damage, and fire damage on the roof.
WFPS members claim that they worked closely with tenants in order to create a checklist of the essentials from each suite. The fire crews worked from inside the building for over an hour in order to extinguish the flames.
Crews also spent hours searching for and retrieving pets from the suites. This included over a dozen dogs and cats.
Winnipeg Transit provided temporary shelter for residents while they waited. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team (ESS) helped about 45 displaced residents to find temporary accommodation.
The fire is still under investigation, but preliminary findings indicate that it was caused by a failure of electrical power.
A resident as well as a firefighter were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.
James Welsman said that he had just unloaded groceries from his vehicle when the alarm went off.
He is used to false alerts but this was different.
I was shocked when my girlfriend told me, “I am not kidding. There is a fire.” The building is on fire. Welsman said, “The roof is burning.” We just sprinted.
According to Scott Wilkinson, deputy chief of fires, the HVAC system was severely damaged on top. More damage was discovered as crews were working.
The water ran through the elevator shafts and stairwells all the way up to the first floor. He said that it was difficult to determine what had seeped into the suites. Modern high-rise buildings should make people safer.
They are there to protect you. “The most important thing to do is pay attention whenever an alarm goes off.”
Welsman, his girlfriend and their children are currently staying in the city with relatives. Once the fire had been put out, he was able retrieve all of his necessities.
On August 18, however, he received an email from the property management firm informing him of the termination of all leases for residents at 221 Stradbrook Avenue due to “the extent of the fire damages.” He has been forced to move to alternative accommodation due to his loss of the first apartment. However, his family and friends are supporting him.
Welsman said, “I feel bad for those people who didn’t have insurance.” I’m realizing that it may take me a while to get home.
