Mother Nature has made it even harder for some coastal communities to find affordable housing, as shown by the destruction left after hurricane Idalia, a Category 3 storm, made landfall.

Taylor County was right on Idalia’s path, and many people lost their lives. People are still in temporary or tarped housing months after Idalia.

Buhler lives with her family in an off-the-beaten track mobile home in Taylor County. As the storm passed, she and her family ran to safety.

She said, “While we were making our way home, neighbors told us that it was possible that tornadoes could occur back here. Because my house is in the middle and has no trees surrounding it, I thought I would not have a home and the wind would’ve destroyed it.”

Buhler returned home and it took her family members two days to dig a pathway into her land. It then took another physical day to reach her house.

Buhler explained, “I had a metal roofing system and some of it was folded inwards. When we entered the house and finally got inside we found water damage to my bedroom and family room as well as one other room I used for my grandchildren when they came and slept over.”

Next came a battle over homeowners insurance.

Buhler stated that several people have assessed the damages, but nothing has been done.

Florida’s Chief financial officer Jimmy Patronis says that more than 30 000 claims have been made since the hurricane. The majority of these claims have been closed. However, some remain open due to their complexity.

Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis said, “The response has at least been quick with Idalia, but there is a reason these events are called disasters. Not everything will be perfect all the time.”

Buhler needs help now.

She hopes for relief to allow her to focus on the senior year in high school of her child.

Buhler stated, “They should not have to worry about whether the roof will leak or how they can raise money to pay for it. That’s exactly what they do.” They work and try to assist, but they shouldn’t worry about it.

Patronis encouraged all to visit My Safe Florida home. He stated that the state offers free windstorm inspections and information is available on this website. The program helps home owners pay for upgrades which could reduce their insurance rates.

In November, the special session of state lawmakers approved additional funding for this program.
