Ado Ekiti — On Tuesday, five people narrowly missed death when Ureje River in Ado Ekiti overflowed the bank of Federal Polytechnic Road. This caused damage to buildings surrounding the river.
It was reported that the five people came from Ureje. As they tried to negotiate the bridge which had been heavily inundated, fast-moving waters swept them down into its valley.
A witness told reporters in Ado Ekiti yesterday that the victims who were about to drown, had been saved by some Hausa diving crews who stood at the bridge waiting for the elderly people.
An eyewitness said that the five victims had been struggling to cross a bridge due to heavy tides when suddenly, they were washed out by water. “The people waiting on the opposite end of the Bridge raised the alarm which attracted Hausa Divers who quickly dived into the River to save the victims.”
The floods submerged many buildings in Eminrin Estate and other areas like Adebayo Avenue, Ita Eku Avenue, Ilupeju Avenue.
About 10 buildings alone in Eminrin Estate suffered damage, and their occupants were left with valuables valued at millions of Naira.
According to Mrs Julianah Ajulo who was one of those affected, the family’s property lost in the flood totaled over N3 million. She called for the government of Lagos to intervene and help the people out of this terrible situation.
She told me: “In truth, we were very happy that Governor Biodun came and dredged the Ureje River Eminrin. This was something we never thought would happen. We have experienced this three times in the last 10 years. Our situation is urgent and we appeal to our state government. This incident has caused us great pain.
The Governor of Oyebanji, however, has promised that his government will devise life-saving plans to help residents and property that have been submerged under the water.
The governor gave this assurance, along with other high-ranking government officials and his deputy Chief Monisade afuye during a trip to the area to evaluate the extent of damage.
She stated: “We are sorry for the people who were affected by these floods.” Mein government will not abandon them. Your concerns will be quickly addressed by our team. The welfare of the citizens is the paramount concern for Governor Oyebanji. We will certainly come to your assistance.
Oyebanji warned Ekiti citizens against unwholesome acts such as the reckless disposal of refuse, sewages in canals and the construction of buildings along waterways. The actions were causing the flooding to worsen.
