FEMA in the area already after previous flooding this summer
CHICAGO (WLS), – Leaders of the south suburb Calumet are asking more money and help to repair damage caused by flash flooding on Sunday.
Many inches of rainfall fell within a short period of time.
This rain has flooded streets and basements.
Some buildings are now being questioned about their structural integrity.
Calumet City mayor Thaddeus jones declared an emergency Wednesday and convened a special Council meeting.
The aldermen in the heated meeting refused to accept $3 million as emergency funding.
A total of $1,000,000 was allocated to assist with the cleanup.
After the town’s infrastructure took 9.5 inches of rainfall in only 2.5 hours, engineers have classified Sunday’s storm 500 years in duration.
Jones explained, “We will be going into the homes of residents to restore them and remove their sewer backup.”
Jones told reporters that Federal Emergency Management Agency had already arrived in the suburbs of the city to assist homeowners affected by the June and July floods.
Jones explained that the residents have been receiving assistance since Thursday. But now we need to ask for more assistance from Governor.
He asks the affected residents to complete an application for flood damage in residential areas.
Terry Douglas, a longtime resident of the area, was one of several residents cleaning stormwater in their homes on Wednesday.
The washing machine is drier than the dryer. The hot water heater is on,” said he.
Clyde Avenue is one of many neighborhoods affected by the flooding that resulted from Sunday’s rain.
Burnham and Dolton, two nearby towns, also suffered flooding.
Metropolitan Water Reclamation Board Commissioner Yumeka BROWN said, “We have always partnered with the local governments to find solutions for these challenges.”
The county and federal governments are asked to help by leaders in the south suburbs.
Calumet city officials hope to also secure nearly $100m to upgrade or replace the decades-old sewers and pipes.
Antionette, a woman who suffered a second flood in her basement, crawlspace and home, lost many of the family’s possessions, including furniture. She said that there was little comfort for those affected.

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago MWRD said Wednesday:
“With over six inches of rainfall falling in Calumet City, and the neighboring South Suburban communities, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, (MWRD), urges continued cooperation, investment, and attention to Stormwater Management and Infrastructure.
The MWRD Tunnel and Reservoir Plan’s (TARP), which includes intercepting sewers, is not equipped to deal with these rainfall totals. Thornton Composite Reservoir (part of TARP) which serves Chicago South of 87th St. and 13 southern suburbs, including Calumet city, is only operating at 15% capacity following the rainstorm. It means that, despite heavy rains and flooding in the area, the water flow did not reach the reservoir.

Stahle, MWRD’s President said that it was vital to keep working together to develop ways to enhance the local stormwater systems of Cook County. “The MWRD’s staff works round the clock to handle excess water that comes from local communities in our 882-square kilometer service area. Local officials are encouraged to contact my office for more information on stormwater management and green infrastructure. Together we achieve more.
“The TARP System continues to function as intended and at full capacity. Thornton Reservoir was first operational in 2015. Since then, it has accumulated more than 53 GB of combined sewage. It is the same water that was otherwise discharged in waterways and basements.
Through the MWRD Stormwater Management Program the MWRD is partnering or has partnered up with several communities in the south suburbs on projects that help reduce flooding. The MWRD distributed over 2,000 rain barrels for free to Calumet city and Dolton residents.
