Maurice Allen, Christina Kolenda and others were charged with armed robberies of nail salons in West Girard Avenue and Aramingo Avenue in September.

Officials said that police arrested two people accused of targeting two Philadelphia nail salons and shooting at a nail technologist, as well as robbing a pregnant women at gunpoint, and at least two more businesses.

Maurice Allen and Christina Kolenda will be both charged with armed robberies of nail salons in West Girard Avenue, Aramingo Avenue, back in September. This was announced by Larry Krasner, Philadelphia’s District Attorney, and Fernanda Sandoval, Assistant District Attorney.

DA Krasner stated, “I commend the meticulous investigative work done by the Philadelphia Police Department as well as our partners in the Gun Violence Task Force.” The GVTF’s Assistant District Attorney Fernanda Sandoval will prosecute these defendants vigorously.

First, the incident happened around 4:20 pm on September 23 in a hair salon located on West Girard Avenue. Two gunmen entered the salon, police said. They demanded money. Surveillance footage obtained by NBC10 showed one of two robbers pointing a weapon at the employees and grabbing a worker.

The suspects fled the scene after stealing more than $2000 in cash and wallets.

Investigators say that about three hours after the robbery, at around 7:33 pm, an employee, 43, was wounded in both her left and right foot. This happened during a robbery of another nail salon located on Aramingo Avenue. Officials said that the employee is still on crutches, more than one month after her injury.

The detectives, after the robberies at the nail salons, used the surveillance technology to find the number plate of the vehicle that was used as a getaway in both cases, namely a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe. Kolenda was identified as the car’s owner and she was arrested. After analyzing the cell phone data, they determined that Allen worked with Kolenda in these robberies.

Allen was searched by police. Investigators reported that they found a gun and.40-caliber cartridges in his house. These matched those fired from the shooting at the nail salon. Officials said they also discovered traditional Muslim clothing that was worn by both suspects during the majority of robberies. Allen was arrested.

Police determined that Allen and Kolenda had also been involved in the armed robberies of the C&C Creamery, located in Philadelphia’s Roxborough neighbourhood on August 21, and Dunkin’ on Rising Sun Avenue on August 28.

Allen was accused of robbing the two businesses, while Kolenda acted as the getaway vehicle in both cases.

Investigators determined that Allen had also been involved in incidents in Philadelphia. This included an attempt armed robbery on August 11, in which a woman pregnant was kept at gunpoint in the 1900 block on Bainbridge Street. Officials said that a passerby intervened during the incident and the suspect fled.

Allen and Kolenda are charged with robbery and conspiracy. They will also be accused of aggravated assault and simple assault. Possession of a weapon of crime, and endangering someone else recklessly, is included in the charges. Officials said Allen would also face charges for violating the uniform firearms law.

“Thanks for the thorough investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department, and the Gun Violence Task Force from the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General we now have a strong case that can be prosecuted,” ADA Sandoval stated. The city is safer because this couple, who terrorized so many people, are now in jail and are going to be tried in court for their crimes.
