One person and five animals were saved from the blaze that engulfed two houses in Hamilton’s Kirkendall North neighborhood.
Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe estimated that the two-and-ahalf storey houses with their roofs “burned” suffered damages of $1.5 million. The incident began around Noon on Thursday.
We’ve experienced some structural failures as a result. Cunliffe said that this was a major fire. At the peak of the fire, over 50 firefighters were on the scene, four aerial ladder vehicles included.
Cunliffe said that the firefighters and four dogs, as well as a cat were also able to remove the man from the first floor.
Hamilton paramedics report that the man, who is believed to be aged between 30-40, has been sent to hospital with critical life-threatening injuries.
Animal Services was notified and the pets are thought to have only suffered minor injuries.
He said: “It is our understanding that fire began in the number 79 of Melbourne Avenue and spread at roof-level to number 77.”
The fire started on the second-floor of a home at 77 Melbourne, where a family of four lived.
The Red Cross has taken them in as shelter residents.
Cunliffe said that the cause of this fire is still unknown. The investigation will be conducted jointly by the Fire Department and Office of the Fire Marshal.
The police closed off Melbourne Street between Dundurn Street and Poulette Streets. They expect that it will remain closed for a while, possibly until tomorrow.
The fire did not cause any damage to two adjacent houses.
