Estates & Facilities installed netting on the exterior of Trinity College Dublin’s Arts Building to protect it from damage caused by high winds.
The spokesperson from College responded in a written statement on The University Times, Wednesday, 15th November, that “Due high winds, on September 20, 2023, one soffit to the overhanging ceiling of the Arts Building has been damaged.”
The underside is referred to as the soffit. It can be a beam, arch or other structural element of a structure. In the context of an exterior roof it refers to the underside, horizontal and elevated, of the roof section that extends over the wall.
In the statement, it was stated that “as a matter urgently the Estates & Facilities Department has made the area secure and engaged a structural engineering firm to assess immediately the affected area and its surroundings.”
The advice given was to temporarily install heavy duty nets on the five adjacent ceilings in order to prevent any future damages, should a second failure occur.
The initial damage was not visible to the students, but the installation of netting has mitigated the risk. Due to the layout of the Arts Building’s floors, any roof piece that falls, without the netting would land either on the roof facing Nassau Street which students cannot access, or the roof projecting out onto Fellows Square underneath the sixth-floor roof.
We have conducted further inspections and are currently preparing documentation for the tendering of ceiling replacement. We will review the tenders and decide the best way to carry out the necessary remedial work.
The damage has caused the College to feel that it must replace the ceilings in the Arts Building. After consulting a structural engineering firm and conducting further inspections the College feels this is necessary. It will cost a lot and disrupt classes on the sixth floor. This could also affect the Classics Department, and Trinity Research in Social Sciences team (TRiSS), whose offices can be found on the 6th floor.
