The Berlin Town Hall has been forced to postpone meetings due to water damage.
Officials announced that several meetings planned for this and next weeks were postponed due to the water damage discovered at the town hall. The damage will be repaired after Aug. 16 and the Berlin council chambers will become available.
Zack Tyndall, Mayor of the City of New York said: “The Council Chambers is currently under construction. We are waiting on the contractor to start rebuilding affected areas.”
On Aug. 3 during routine maintenance, water damage and mould were found in the wall facing north of the Council Chambers. This week, the town reported that work was stopped due to an excessive amount of cation. Further testing and evaluations could then be conducted.
According to the news release of the town, “after the testing results revealed that there were no environmental or safety risks,” the staff at the town worked together with contractors from outside to remove and clean up the area. While work is being done, several contractor vehicles will be parked in front of the town hall.
On August 17, a field meeting of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship will be held in Berlin. Tyndall stated that the work on restoration would be finished by August 16. Ben Cardin, Maryland senator, chairs the committee.
The release from this week states that the Town of Berlin continues to operate inside its building, and town hall is open to residents between 8 am to 4 pm (so they can pay their bills). Meetings normally held in council chambers were postponed due to the damage. Berlin Planning Commission, Berlin Board of Appeals and Berlin Board of Appeals have all been rescheduled for August 23. Town council’s meeting for August 14 has been rescheduled to take place at 5 pm on the 21st of Aug. We Heart Berlin representatives, a nonprofit that is working to bring a skatepark to Berlin, expect elected officials to also vote at one of the next meetings on the location of the park (though it hasn’t been confirmed yet).
