Seven children, who damaged a Grade II-listed home worth 1.2 million PS have been brought to court. The damage has reduced the value of the house by 300,000.
The youngsters, some as young as 11 years old, vandalized the house for a whole month, using chainsaws, an axe and sledgehammers in each of the bedrooms. It was described as a ‘war zone’. The vandals destroyed an ornately stained-glass window, double glazed conservatory doors and a number of handmade hardwood door – some more than 100 year old.
Joanna Pittard and Matt Pittard’s house was broken into by teenagers who carved messages on mahogany window sills, and even removed taps, leaving water everywhere. Glass was also scattered and graffiti had been scrawled all over the walls.
Pittards who live in Newbury in Berkshire bought the Isle of Wight home to move into with their daughters. But the group, including two girls, sprayed ketchup and bleach throughout the house between May and July last year. They even destroyed Mrs Pittard’s wedding gown by covering it with oil, nail polish remover and footprints.
At the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court, seven perpetrators who were all between 13-16 years old and could not be identified for legal purposes, admitted to criminal damage of property. They each received a fine of 1,500 pounds sterling. Ann Smout for the prosecution said that the crimes were committed at a’substantial building’ in Shanklin. Joanna and Matt Pittard stayed at this address during Easter 2022. The Pittards spent a week at the address and they left it clean, tidy and very well maintained. Court heard that the family had been away from home for a little over a month when damage occurred.
According to the prosecutor, 16 months after the vandalism, the property’s value has increased by approximately 300,000. The exterior is still covered with scaffolding and windows are boarded. The neighbours still cannot comprehend the damage.
A neighbour spoke to the Daily Mail. “We were sitting in our garden when we heard glass breaking. Since it was a close-knit neighbourhood, my spouse went over with another neighbor and could see objects being thrown out of closed windows. He said, “We’ve called the cops whoever you may be” and then I called and explained what happened. “My husband said that he saw them leave, and they were wearing a smug expression.”
She described the experience as horrendous, filling the skips up with her own possessions. In a recent statement, she said that her house is still in chaos. She “would not fully recover” from this experience.
The teenagers admitted in interviews to varying degrees their involvement in the impulsive damages. One of them revealed that they created a “slip-and-slide” in the bathroom. The court heard that all the teens had shown remorse, expressed regret and improved their attitude and behaviour since.
Keith Jones, the chairman of magistrates said that he couldn’t believe their behavior. After the court case for one teenager was adjourned he addressed six teens and said, “We’ll never know exactly what happened or who did it.” As a joint venture, you’re equally liable. “It is not a good reflection of the six people involved.”
