Hays School District will close Hemphill elementary school through Thursday, likely to give crews enough time to clean the mold from the building.
Tim Savoy, district spokesman Tim Savoy’s said that the campus closure would give workers time for remediation of a common type mold in 13 classrooms. Staff had investigated a smell similar to mold in an elementary school located at 3995 RM150 in Kyle after investigating a moldy smell.
Savoy stated that the district conducted an air-quality test in order to determine whether mold existed within classrooms.
Savoy reported that mitigation crews worked on Wednesday to eliminate mold from a classroom where the smell had been reported. They found widespread mold, he said.
Savoy stated that “in fact, we discovered at least thirteen classrooms affected by the problem in the areas behind the wall from the floor up to approximately three feet above the floor.”
Hays students did not have class Monday to Wednesday due to a scheduled break.
According to the district, remediators found that the mold type in Hemphill was Aspergillus and Penicillium. These can have a negative effect on people who are immune compromised.

In an email sent to parents, Principal Monica Salas Truhill wrote: “I understand that unexpected school cancellations can cause disruptions.” Rest assured that our safety and the safety of all our staff is our top priority. You should avoid the building if remediators are actively working to remove and disturb mold.
Savoy explained that the crews would have to remove 3-5 feet of wall and possibly install a temporary cover in order to allow students to return to the building quickly. He said they could install a permanent solution during upcoming holidays.
Starting Friday, the district will provide students with meals through a Grab-and-Go service.
Hays district plans downtime into the school year so that students won’t have to make up any of their missed days. The district plans to request a waiver for the remaining days from the Texas Education Agency.
