IRONBOUND Newark (PIX11). For almost a century and a half, the Ironbound Community in Newark New Jersey has had a school that serves grades K-8.
Some families are now wondering, after an early-morning fire Monday on one of the major areas at the Wilson Avenue School in order to open the doors in safety for the teachers and students arriving on Tuesday.
Around 2:30 in the morning, neighbors reported seeing Newark Fire Department vehicles and engines responding to a fire. Fire department officials, on the other hand, stated in a written statement that they responded to the blaze “at around 3 a.m.”
The school occupies almost a whole city block and has played a major role in the Ironbound community since its opening in 1881.
The school has a great deal of memories that I have. Carlos Rocha who attended the school from 1979 to 1980 and graduated eighth grade said, “A lot of memories.” “It was a surprise that it occurred.”
Ten fire engines were called to the scene.
Joseph Barreiro lives directly across the street, where Wilson Avenue is intersected by Ferry Street and Alyea Street and Patterson Street.
Barreiro said, “My father bangs on my window saying, The school is on fire.'” “I looked out the window [and] said, ‘Oh my god!
Barreiro, too, graduated from this school in late 1973.
“It is painful,” said the man. “It hurts,” he said.
Barreiro stated that the Wilson Avenue School, after 142-years, has been a center of neighborhood life.
He said to PIX11 News: “This history is ours, and our life.” “It is like our second house.”
Maria Barreiro graduated from the same school, partially boarded-up on the Monday afternoon following the fire, in 1954. Her mother, Maria Barreiro, had worked there as a teaching assistant.
The fire made her feel sad.
Even so, she still tried to find the positive side.
“Thank god they got in. It was only these two room,” she added, referring two classrooms on the first-floor of the school, where firefighters sprayed the fires.
According to the families, the most significant fire damage occurred in a multipurpose and a class room.
Water used to combat the fire damaged classrooms beneath the room that was destroyed. Below the damaged rooms is also the library. Although it’s unclear how much damage has been done, on Monday, maintenance workers and firefighters opened all school windows, in an attempt to clear the smoke.
The third-generation college student wondered what was going to happen.
Dylan Barreiro is an eighth-grade student who said: “I’m not interested in going virtual, or having to attend a new school.”
His classmates and he are all scheduled to start class the day after Labor Day.
Newark Public Schools, for example, said:
In preparation for the arrival of students and employees next week, district workers have been working hard to prepare and make sure that building is secure. We will keep staff, students, their parents, and any other interested parties informed of the next steps as school starts on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023. The Newark Fire Department’s heroic efforts and the security and facilities team are a great credit to us. The Teachers’ Union stated that tentatively, teachers were expected to begin training Tuesday in a new school. Meanwhile, the Wilson Avenue School was being prepared to welcome full faculty, students and staff next week.
