The Commonwealth continues to be plagued by wildfires. In Patrick County, the newest fire has now spread over nearly 1,000 acres. The Governor of the Commonwealth, Glenn Youngkin, has declared a state-of-emergency in order to prevent further fires.
According to the Department of Forestry, the fire in Patrick County is now only 35% contained. It has burned approximately 850 acres. It doesn’t end there.
Bedford Fire Department Chief Todd Stone says that they are working round the clock to combat fires within their community.
Stone said, “we have seen about 20 brush fires within the county over the past week.”
Chief Stone said that some of these fires actually caused damage to homes. This prompted both the Department and the County to implement a burning ban in an effort to reduce the harm.
Stone said that since there hasn’t been any significant rainfall in the past 15 days, and wind is present almost daily, a fire can spread quickly within minutes.
Wildfires in Southwest Virginia have scorched many areas within the past two weeks. A wildfire in Craig County burned nearly 100 acres. In Pulaski County, over 500 acres of land were destroyed.
Cory Swift, from the Department of Forestry, says that this situation is not uncommon.
Swift said that the fire season in Southwest Virginia is usually characterized by larger fires.
Swift said that dry, windy conditions play a major role in wildfire spread.
Swift said that the wildfire risk is high throughout Virginia.
Swift and Chief Stone both shared that you need to move firewood, leaves and sticks away from your home in order to prevent fires during Fall. According to Swift and Chief Stone, a distance of 25 feet will help reduce fire damage.
According to Chief Stone, during the entire burn ban the Department will be able to respond with at least two agencies for every fire in the event that they require extra personnel.
