Prince George’s County Police warns businesses of the increase in financial crimes.

According to the department, car dealerships have been increasingly targeted.

AMKO Auto in Temple Hills said recently that thieves broke into the dealership and took every car key.

The cost of buying new cars was $100,000.

They were fortunate to be able to recover this amount within 24 hours in order to continue selling vehicles. The concern, however, is that small businesses will not be able do this.

AMKO’s financial director, Leon, said that the Saint Barnabas Road dealership is constantly targeted by fraudsters.

Leon remembered that “just this week, we had a client who wanted to purchase a vehicle, made the deal and gave him the deposit, but he then presented us with a fake check.”

The surveillance video taken inside AMKO Auto captures the moment Prince George’s County Police arrested the alleged perpetrator.

Leon says that it appears as if criminals try something new every day.

He said, “When I call them creative I’m talking about super-creative.” They will print out bank statements, check stubs and cashier’s cheques right in front of them.

Leon thinks that thieves are becoming more and more intelligent, and this is what makes crime against business worse.

He said, “Here it is again.” It’s so bad, that even honest people have to take a second glance.

The Prince George’s County Police Lieutenant Joseph Bellino says that check fraud has become the biggest scam targeting businesses. This is largely due to the new technologies like mobile deposits.

In the past year, we have seen construction supply companies, churches and funeral homes affected by point-of-sale skimming devices. Other companies that were affected include auto dealers, banking, transport and trucking companies, HOAs and apartment rental companies.

According to investigators, in Prince George’s County the calculated total monetary losses for individuals and businesses is 10 million dollars.

Brian Fischer, PGPD media relations manager said: “It’s not good for anyone when we have people plotting to rip-off businesses all day.” It’s not good to have people plotting on how they can rip-off businesses all day.

On Friday, November 3, there will be an Adelphi Marriott Hotel seminar on fraud prevention.

The FBI and the Prince George’s County Police will also be on hand to give you safety tips. RSVP here.
